Geist reservoir and Fall Creek are an important source of local drinking water for thousands of central Indiana residents. Recognizing this, several local residents and leaders from the UWRWA sought and received a Department of Natural Resources Lake and River Enhancement grant to complete a holistic study of possible pollution sources to the streams and reservoir. The study will conclude with written Watershed Management Plan (WMP) that will help develop an approach to improve local water quality. Recommendations from the project will rely on voluntary involvement from many landowners and residents in the watershed. The WMP will help leverage funds for such future cost share projects with residents.
The Upper Fall Creek Watershed (map) which contributes water to Geist Reservoir is approximately 140,162 acres. Fall Creek, the major stream in the watershed, starts in Henry County; however, Fall Creek and its tributaries pass through 5 other counties (Delaware, Madison, Hancock, Hamilton, & Marion) and total more than 169 miles of stream. Sixty-two percent (62%) of the streams in the watershed do not meet State water quality standards. Towns in the Upper Fall Creek Watershed include Middletown (Henry Co), Pendleton (Madison Co), McCordsville and Fortville (Hancock Co).
